Archives and Libraries in New Jersey

The National Archives Northeast Region
The National Archives has archival materials used by many teachers and students for history day. In addition, our region has Federal records from New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The New Jersey State Archives
Located in the capital city of Trenton, the State Archives is New Jersey's official research center and repository for the preservation of all public records of enduring historical value, spanning 340 years of colonial and state history. The greater part of the Archives' holdings comprises records created by officials, offices, agencies and departments of the colonial and state government. In addition, the Archives has certain county, municipal and federal government records, as well as selected non-governmental records. History teachers and students frequently use primary sources from our collections for National History Day and other research projects. The State Archives' web site is:

Library of Congress, American Memory Project
The American Memory Project is a digital record of American history, containing documents, maps, photographs, mooving images, sound recordings and memorbilia from American life. The collection of over 5 million items chronicles daily life as well as major events. Searchable by broad subject or keywords. The learning page also includes sample lesson plans and other teaching suggestions.

Electronic New Jersey, A Digital Archive of New Jersey History
This digital archive of New Jersey history provides an in-depth study of the role New Jersey played in the American Revolution, in social protest during the 1960's and 70's, an in other significant historical events.
